Tyre allocations for seven rounds of this year’s V8 Supercars championship have been reduced as part of the category’s continued commitment to cutting costs.
It is estimated the cut-back will save teams a combined total of almost Aus $600,000.
The all-soft tyre events – Tasmania Microsoft Office 365, Chill Perth 360, Ipswich 360 and Winton 360 – have been reduced by one set, while two sets have been removed from the Gold Coast 600.
In the mixed-tyre meetings, the Sucrogen Townsville 400 has seen a cut of one set of softs, while in the all-hard compound events, the Phillip Island 360 allocation has been reduced by one set.
“The changes save a significant amount of money for the teams without negatively affecting the show,” said V8 Supercars Commission member Chris Lambden in an interview with Speedcafe.com.
“It’ll put a bit of a premium on intelligent tyre management at a couple of the events.
“We haven’t touched the longer events like Bathurst but certainly some of the sprint races, particularly the ones with the 60/60 format, had a little bit of fat in the original tyre allocation.”
