The V8 Supercars Commission has announced it will add a set of soft tyres into its Saturday SuperSprint format at the SKYCITY Triple Crown Darwin.

The original allocation for Darwin was three sets of hard tyres and one set of softs, but each team will now get an extra set of the Dunlop soft-compound tyres to be used across both Saturday’s second 60 kilometre race and its qualifying session.

“On Saturday teams must qualify and race on the same compound”, read a V8 Supercars statement.

“Qualifying for the first Saturday race (and that race) will utilise hard compound tyres while qualifying for the second Saturday race (and that race) will use soft compound tyres.

“The Sunday race remains unchanged although teams can carry through hard tyres from Saturday. They are not permitted to use the Saturday soft tyre on Sunday.”

Currently only confirmed for Darwin, it is believed that more soft tyres will be added to the season’s remaining SuperSprint events, following a lack of action on the harder rubber compound in the Saturday race formats.

The move comes after the category announced earlier ahead of the Winton event that teams would be given an extra set of hard Friday practice tyres for all the remaining SuperSprint events.
