Volvo Polestar Racing has confirmed James Moffat will switch to the Volvo factory team for the 2016 V8 Supercars Championship.

Despite scoring Nissan Motorsport’s only race win to date, Moffat will leave the team at the end of the year after three years’ service.

2015 has been a difficult year for Moffat, the son of touring car legend Allan Moffat. He currently sits fourth and last among the Nissan drivers in the V8 Supercars drivers’ championship, in 18th place.

The move is believed to have been prompted by the team unable to offer Moffat a new contract due to a lack of personal sponsorship.

“At 31 years old I believe that James is in the prime of his career and I am confident that he will be a very worthwhile contributor to my team,” said team owner Garry Rogers.

After making his V8 Supercars debut in 2010, Moffat spent two years at Dick Johnson Racing before his move to Nissan Motorsport.

“I am thrilled to join Volvo Polestar Racing and Wilson Security Racing GRM for the 2016 V8 Supercars,” said Moffat.

“The team has shown great progress over the past two seasons and I look forward to driving the #34 Volvo.”

Moffat will join Scott McLaughlin at Garry Rogers’ Volvo Polestar-backed team following the announcement that David Wall will be leaving at the end of the season.

“I hope that I can see the #33 car in my rear view mirror now rather then in front of me,” joked Moffat.
